Charlotte Schmitz
by Charlotte Schmitz from Berlin, Germany
When everything happened mid-March, I had just come back from Galápagos before the borders were closed. Sometimes, I wonder how different my last months would have been if I had stayed there. Pure nature and tranquility. Instead, I worked from morning until evening in my apartment in Berlin, going only out for walks and groceries. I created a collective project of 400+ women and photographers around the world, which gave me and many people insight into the lives of women around the world. Even though the questions surrounding how much to work, travel, and the importance of caring for oneself have been following me for years, the pandemic has helped me in trying to work on my answers.
Throughout much of my adulthood, I have been running far, and maybe even away.
Maybe it’s time to rest, time to stay. And have coffee in my old nightdress among the plants in a garden, which I long so much for.
SELF-PORTRAITS: PHOTOGRAPHERS IN CONFINEMENT
Curated by Svetlana Bachevanova
A collection of self-portraits made by photojournalists from five continents during the unprecedent lockdown due to the corona virus pandemic.
Photographers are people on the road, living to document the lives of others.
Constrained by the lockdown, many of them had their first experience of being still long enough to begin seeing and understanding small details about who they are, their lifestyles and values, that were overshadowed while they were busy. These self-portraits express their experience.
This is a unique collection of self-portraits from some of the best lenses in photojournalism at an historic moment.
Photographers in Confinement is a project in process and I welcome additional submissions from photojournalists at svetlana@fotoevidence.com
I am looking for potential exhibition partners in the USA and abroad.
Svetlana Bachevanova is a founder and publisher of FotoEvidence, long time photojournalist and curator.
