about
FOTODEMIC is an online platform established in April 2020 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Through public programs and the curation of innovative work, FOTODEMIC creates an open space for the exploration of different visual strategies.
We embrace the humanism that has emerged worldwide, as well as more resonant visions of what our post-pandemic future should be. We invite experimental image-based media strategies of all kinds, and are open to anyone who wishes to participate.
FOTODEMIC is founded by Fred Ritchin and a group of graduates from the International Center of Photography in New York.
Many speak of us going “back to normal” when this pandemic diminishes. But I don’t think that the pre-pandemic world was “normal,” unless one considers destroying the environment, exacerbating climate change, fostering a class of the super-rich while abusing the poor, and polarizing people into tribal enclaves that hate each other, to be normal. Can we instead use this extraordinarily painful moment to ask ourselves whether we can locate a healthier, saner version of normal, and move forward collectively in that direction? My hope is that FOTODEMIC will help us in this quest.
