“That’s a New World Order”
by Ira Lupu from Washington D.C.
On January 6th, a mob of Donald Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., where Congress was certifying the electoral victory of Joe Biden. The chaos erupted shortly after the president gave an incendiary speech that once again falsely claimed widespread voter fraud. It was an act of sedition and a culmination of a presidency marked by racial injustice, lies and corruption. But for the men and women that breached the walls, it was an act of patriotism. This division, coupled with the tame response from law enforcement and the right-wing news spin, has proven one thing: America is at a tipping point.
“THAT’S THE NEW WORLD ORDER” was one of the phrases photographer Ira Lupu overheard while documenting the siege. In a divided country, who does this “new order” belong to?
