Peru has been walking on the edge of the abyss. The political crisis erupted in early November with the unconstitutional removal of President Martín Vizcarra. Fed up with the abuses, corruption and mediocrity of a political class lacking legitimacy, thousands of Peruvians took to the streets in order to express their rejection to the government of congressman Manuel Merino, who assumed the presidential mandate.
Two young martyrs, Jack Brian Pintado,22, and Inti Sotelo Camargo, 24, lost their lives in these peaceful protests, which were, however, violently repressed by the police with all kinds of weapons. In the midst of the greatest health and economic crisis caused by the pandemic, (Peru has the second highest per capita mortality rate in the world), Peruvian youth let them feel the profound generational change that is coming in the country. The Bicentennial Generation, baptized under this name since Peru will celebrate its 200 years of independence in 2021, achieved the resignation of Manuel Merino after five days of protesting. A transitional government has been established in order to guarantee the cleanliness of the next elections that will take place in April of next year.
Perú ha estado caminando al borde del abismo. La crisis política estalló a inicios de noviembre con la destitución inconstitucional del presidente Martín Vizcarra. Hartos de los abusos, corrupción y mediocridad de una clase política carente de legitimidad y representatividad, miles de peruanos y peruanas salieron a las calles para expresar su repudio al gobierno del congresista Manuel Merino, quien asumió el mandato presidencial.
Dos jóvenes mártires, Jack Brian Pintado, 22, e Inti Sotelo Camargo, 24, perdieron la vida en estas pacíficas protestas que fueron, sin embargo, violentamente reprimidas por la policía con toda clase de armas. En medio de la mayor crisis sanitaria y económica ocasionada por la pandemia, (Perú tiene la segunda tasa de mortalidad per cápita más alta del mundo) la juventud peruana dejó sentir el profundo cambio generacional que se avecina en el país. La Generación del Bicentenario, bautizada bajo este nombre ya que el Perú celebrará en 2021 sus 200 años de independencia, logró la renuncia de Manuel Merino tras cinco días de protestas. Se estableció un gobierno transitorio que debe garantizar la limpieza de las elecciones que tomarán lugar en abril del próximo año.
Social upheaval, a manifestation of the profound dissatisfaction experienced especially by young people unfolds as an irreversibly interconnected experience throughout the world, called by the sociologist Donatella Della Porta as the transnationalization of protests. As the times change and our political systems urge non-binary options, youth are finding new ways to organize themselves, share information on social media, and employ creative tactics to channel their frustration and defend themselves from police repression.
Finally, just a few months before celebrating Peru’s 200 years as a Republic, one wonders, how does the Bicentennial Generation dreams of itself?
La convulsión social, manifestación de la profunda insatisfacción experimentada especialmente por los jóvenes, se nos revela como una experiencia irreversiblemente interconectada en todo el mundo, denominada por la socióloga Donatella Della Porta como la transnacionalización de las protestas. A medida que los tiempos cambian y nuestros sistemas políticos urgen por opciones no binarias, la juventud encuentra nuevos medios para organizarse, compartir información en redes sociales y emplear tácticas creativas para canalizar su frustración y defenderse de la represión policial.
Finalmente, a tan solo unos meses de celebrar los 200 años como República, cabe preguntarse ¿cómo es que se sueña a sí misma la Generación del Bicentenario?
