Inside Outside

by Amira Karaoud from Louisville, Kentucky

Quarantine has left me full of anxiety about being outside; about accidentally touching someone or something that carries the virus. There is the fear of having the virus and passing it to others. It has been a time of change which has forced me to look at the familiar differently, finding other ways to photograph people.

I started biking in the neighborhoods of Louisville, Kentucky freeing myself from the quarantine, the fear of the virus, the news. I met a lot of people outside using the space around them in different ways and at different times than usual. Eating carry-out in the porch at 2 pm in the afternoon, talking to the neighbor from each others’ porches, and each in their own way making changes and adjustments to the new life in quarantine.

Britney lost her job since the shutdown of restaurants in Louisville. She’s been enjoying the sun, relaxing everyday on her front porch reading or just enjoying the sun. Britney plans to convert her van and travel around the US with her partner. Her first stop, once it’s safe to travel, will be New Orleans, where she will visit a friend.
