A State of Quarantine

by Susmit Sarkar from Kolkata, India

The following photographs are part of a project I began when the pandemic first hit our country. While some of these images were taken at my home and consist of my family members, the rest of the pictures I took in a remote village in Sunderban, where, due to lack of work, there is a struggle for livelihood. There's a striking contrast in the state of mind of people in urban and rural environments. While my family members became anxious and restless during the lockdown, the rural villagers lined up in desperation to receive some aid as they struggled due to lack of work. It's sad yet surprising how little we know of people and their struggle. While documenting the series, I felt a strong urge to show their plight to the world, so that the message can reach anyone who is willing to support those in need.
