DIARY CURATION #02
RE-ADJUSTING OUR FRAMES
by Zoe Freilich
I find it ironic—or maybe it makes perfect sense—that a global pandemic can help us to pay more attention to the things in our lives that are right up close, the things we typically overlook. Our world has been rattled, and with that comes new perspectives. The following three diaries find playfulness, novelty, even joy in the every-day objects, routines, and places of our self-isolation, and hint at the importance of reevaluating our frames and the questions we ask.

“Microcosmos [pursues] the inner universe through the oneiric perspective of trivial objects around home. The representations might be resemblances, like the Milky Way Galaxy inside a cup of coffee or molecules inside the hand sanitizer bottles. The idea of this project is to channel the anxieties, aspirations, and the void from the isolation and take them to a creative refuge. It is to give purpose to this suspended time that feels like a perpetual Déjà vu. It is to grant the soul a brief comfort and a deep breath.”
All Inside (My Screw is Not Loose Yet)
by Natalia Malyutina from Moscow, Russia
“I came up with an idea of an unusual approach to my household duties. I decided to take my kitchen as a place of modern art. My main goal was to show the absurdity of self-isolation. The stereotypes of my gender role are also shown throughout this project: wife, mother and housemaid, who is trying to break free of the clichés.”
by Daniel Harel
“From the tiniest little domestic chore to the most important work call, the logistics of the home have drastically changed. We have had to repurpose rooms, define new areas, and most importantly, make do with what we have at our disposal. In many cases, the balance is not anymore and what did not matter is now of paramount importance. In this series I explore how my daily rituals have shifted to accommodate my private, work, and social life under a single roof.”
