DIARY CURATION #04

Families Around the World

by Daniela López Amézquita

Through different visual approaches, this selection of diaries shows how families experience quarantine around the world. What drew me in to these entries is how the author’s family routines and activities bring them together. In this period of time, these diaries are a reminder of how important it is to support each other in order to know that we are not alone.

BECHA / SPRING

by Tatyana Gogoleva, Moscow, Russia

The statement “The foundation of my world is my family” is the beginning of this warm and tender portrayal of a Russian family dedicated to their founder; the grandmother Anna. Images of Tatyana’s family taking care of plants reflect this statement and become a metaphor of the way we construct family bonds, making them grow every day.

QUARANTINE

by Ekaterina Esebua, Brooklyn, NY

Living in New York City means learning to live with many roommates that could be family, friends, or strangers. In the best of cases, they can become family. In this diary, Ekaterina portrays her experience living with six family members in a two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn, NY. In this intimate piece, she captures their day to day life and the way windows can become a connection with the outside, a way to escape in all forms.

CUADERNO DE CASTIGO / PUNISHMENT NOTEBOOK

by Andrés Yépez, Quito, Ecuador

Through family portraits and images from a quiet city, Andrés expresses how his fears have emerged with the pandemic. Even when some images seem to come from a dark place, a light of hope is always present in the way Andres contemplates family members and captures family moments such as making a puzzle.
